TIPS for Beginners. Part 2

Holding the stick - it's the end of the previous rotation and the beginning of the next

When you are just starting to do ski and do a few turns at a time, it's natural to consider setting sticks to start a rotation. This you have been taught in class, and it is practiced by most beginners. But if you have already mastered the implementation of a series of linked turns, buy you may got some difficulties to plant the stick at the beginning of the rotation . In this case, when making the stick forward into position and setting it on the snow between turns create pauses and the relationship between rotations is pertubated. Try not to think about setting a stick as a signal to start rotation. Instead, start putting it at the end of the turn when you are in the low position, knees bending for the edging (see fig.). Thus, you'll get that end of the previous rotation will be the beginning of the next, and will not make unnecessary pauses when changing direction.

Where should I put a stick into turns

The basic rule is that you should put the stick in front of you (see fig.). If the turn is executed correctly, then the upper body is more or less facing the valley, and a line drawn from the bottom of the ski-tip to the places of the stick coincides with the fall-line. During a large-radius bends to be performed at relatively high speeds on wide slope, the upper body is facing almost face the ski-tip (top). In this case, place a stick about 30 cm from the ski-tip. So, by turning in a small radius, running on a steep slope, you must as soon as possible across the fall-line. In this case,if you put the stick too close the ski-tip, it will prevent the movement of skis. That is why on a steep slope put a stick on the side of the ski and never closer than a distance of 45 cm from its ski-tip (bottom figure).

Skiing, but with packages under yours arms

The beginners often have a habit of pressing their elbows on their sides in the plant of the stick. This significantly limits the amplitude of movement of the hand and sometimes even leads to the fact that the skier was rejected by the mountain. Try during the slide to visualize that you carry packages under yours arms, then you shall lead involuntarily the elbows upper the torso (see fig.). When performing a series of turns you will see how to increase the amplitude of the arm. After a little practice movement, raising the stick will be smoother, and your balance will improve.

Skidding on an imaginary line parallel to the slope

Rejection of the upper body up the hill - one of the most common mistakes beginners (see right figure)..

    The consequence of this are:
  • the oblique descent: - rigid lower leg and excessive charge on uphill-ski.
  • the turn: rigid exterior leg and excessive charge on the inside ski.
The easiest way to resolve this error is during oblique descent. Find a flat wide and smooth track and try for oblique descent have one hand on an imaginary line parallel to the slope (left image). The upper body and legs have to form an angle. This weight will be largely shifted to the edge of the downhill ski, as it should be.

Eliminate excessive rotation of the upper body

Many beginners turn their ski strongly with the upper body, which can lead to unpleasant consequences on steep slopes, on ice, as well as heavy snow (see Fig.). Furthermore, excessive movement of the upper part of the body - is a waste of energy, it not only reduces the effectiveness of rotations, but also causes early fatigue. Most skiers who have "hanging" the upper body, and ride with a clenched, as if glued to his feet (left image). The solution is very simple. Practise, feet slightly apart (right image). Such conduct to give greater steering force to the legs and facilitate the change of direction without excessive rotation of the upper part of the body.

How to calm your upper body when changing direction

Excessive motion of the upper part of the body for many beginners is a serious problem: they degrade the quality of the rotation and dull the sense of relief. An effective exercise to relieve upper body is a temporary exemption phase entering the corner (see fig.). Find a wide slope of moderate complexity. Of the external oblique descent put your turn in a small focus and try to don't make any movements of the upper part of the body, charge inner edge set at point-blank skiing. Then give the inside ski to a position parallel to the outer ski. You will find that the rotation starts only because of external load on the internal edge skis - no other traffic is not required. Perform the exercise without the sticks, the better to feel the upper and lower body separately. Having calmed the upper body, move to the parallel turn.

Reduce the amplitude of motion of the upper part of the body

Many beginners try to "help" the implementation of pan, tilt your upper body or rotating it. But if you have mastered taxiing down, every movement of the upper part of the body will only worsen the turn. To get rid of this bad habit, try the following exercise (see Fig.). Going down the easy route, balancing poles, keeping them on the back of the wrist. The challenge is to keep the stick in a horizontal position over the skis. This will exclude the possibility of deviation of the upper body and excessive rotation by it, and it will make to keep their hands in front of him. Once you've mastered this exercise, go to the normal ski, but do not forget about how you are balancing sticks. Reduce the amplitude of motion of the upper part of the body, you will greatly improve the quality of the rotations.

Look in the direction you are going to

beginners are sometimes difficult to start the first turn of the oblique descent. Often this is due to lack of advance of the upper body. If you find yourself in this situation, not focus on what is directly in front of your skis, and look in the direction you are going to turn. Changing the direction of view will make your upper body turn "face" in the valley and take anticipatory position - the position ready to turn (see Fig.). Such a stance would facilitate the change of the supporting leg and pereedgeovku skis, making them more natural.

Set the direction of your movement with your eyes

Typically, skier tends to go in the direction he looks. Thus, the skier, who in the final phase of the rotation looks across the slope, often ends with a long oblique skid. As a result, it requires considerable effort to enter the next turn. When ski-edge should look into the gaps between the trees rather than trees. At the open slope, locate the object in the middle of the slope and go to this place when cornering. When you look into the valley through the shutter, the upper body will move through the slope, while the skis will turn to right and then left, and changing direction would be greatly facilitated (see Fig.).

How to ride a hilly slope

Riding on the hilly slope is torture for beginners. However, you can make it fun and exciting. To avoid this turning into the depressions between the hills, where the entire ski in contact with the snow and difficult to make her change direction. Better driving up to the hill side and when you're on top of it, turn the skis. Then, finish turning, slipping down into the hollow. After turning your skis will be sent to the side next hill, ready for another turn at its top (see fig.).

To improve the technology for a good ride

When you follow some good skiers, you can learn a lot from them, and that without explanation (see Fig.). Knowledge of more experienced friend won't give you verbal communication. However, in this case, if you are on the heels of a good skier, remember the following:

  • 1) must be sure that the leader knows that he's going to ski for you.
  • 2) need to stay as close as possible to the leader for that the time between his movement and your imitation of the movement will be minimal;
  • 3) need to focus on the leader's legs and try to repeat his movements of his lower body part. The experience gained by you in this way will significantly sure improve your technique of skiing.
